Pilates classes in Blackheath Complementary Health Centre.
Pilates is a gentle, non-aerobic movement form originated by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s, and throughout his long lifetime, in his New York studio. It is often practised in this country for its therapeutic effects – balancing out the muscular system and developing optimal functioning for the body and mind as a whole. A strong focus on the use of the breath serves to integrate the different systems of the body in movement, and can act as a means for reducing tension and pain, as well as finding a greater ease in movement.
Pilates is taught here in a semi-private setting – with only 3 clients in a group, each person can work individually on their own needs whilst under constant supervision. Pilates can be particularly beneficial for back care, injury rehabilitation, reduced mobility in specific areas, and conditions such as MS, osteoporosis or rheumatoid arthritis. It is equally beneficial as a means to balance whatever stresses and strains come with daily life, and is suitable for men and women of all ages and lifestyles.
What to expect:
Sessions are an hour long. You will need to bring your own mat, and wear clothes that are comfortable to move in without buckles or restrictive fabrics. You may either work barefoot or in clean socks. Bring a few layers in cooler months.
Following an initial postural assessment and discussion of your needs and goals, you will be guided through a series of movement sequences focusing on concentration, breath, centring (a similar concept to core stability), precision, flow and control. Exercises should never be painful, and they can always be adapted to suit your particular needs.
How many sessions do I need?
Joseph Pilates practised what he preached throughout his life. He was known for claiming that results were speedy, but emphasised the need for practice and perseverance in his method.
Classes are booked in blocks of 5 or 6 weeks, yet development is an ongoing process, and many people find that their Pilates practice becomes a lifetime habit. In one block you will begin to get a feel for the method and gain a sense of where it may take you over time.
Medical conditions and pregnancy
If you are, or have recently been pregnant, or you have a medical condition, please discuss this when making your initial enquiry. Pilates can be enormously beneficial in both cases, but you may be asked to gain consent of your GP or health practitioner before starting classes.
The class consists of up to three people to ensure that you get a personal assessment.
The class needs to be booked in blocks of six so that you get the most benifit from your Pilates sessions.
The class times are 6.30pm until 7.30pm and 7.30pm until 8.30pm and 8.30pm until 9.30pm
